My Fiancé Gave Me a Prenup - What Do I Do Now?
First, take a breath. Being given a prenuptial agreement does not necessarily mean that your future spouse does not trust you or expects the marriage to fail. It does mean, however, that you are being asked to sign an important legal agreement that may affect your income, property and financial rights for many years to come.
Before you sign, have the agreement reviewed by your own experienced prenup lawyer.BrideLawyer™ provides independent prenuptial agreement review and representation in New York and New Jersey. Our attorneys are licensed in both states, and Shari A. Rivkind brings more than 38 years of legal experience to the firm.
You will work with a real lawyer who will read the entire agreement, learn about your circumstances, explain what the document means and advise you about whether any changes should be considered. You will not receive an automated summary or be pushed through an online form.
Bridelawyer is a division of The Rivkind Law Firm, with experienced attorneys, Shari A. Rivkind and Morgan J. Weil. They are devoted to educating and serving brides. No cookie cutter agreements here. Our attorneys take the time to understand your unique circumstances and ensure that your prenuptial agreement is tailored to your needs and that you fully understand its terms and implications

Every couple’s financial circumstances are different. Depending upon your needs, a prenuptial agreement may address:
The lawyer who prepared the prenup represents your future spouse—not you. That attorney may have been professional and pleasant, but their responsibility is to protect their own client’s interests.
You deserve the same opportunity to receive independent legal advice.
Having your own New York or New Jersey prenup attorney does not mean that you are being difficult or looking for a fight. It means that both people will have the opportunity to understand the agreement before signing it.
You can love and trust your future spouse while still wanting experienced legal advice about a binding contract. Those things are not inconsistent.
Depending upon your circumstances, our independent prenup review may include:
· Reviewing the complete proposed prenuptial agreement
· Meeting with you privately to discuss your concerns and goals
· Explaining the agreement in clear, understandable language
· Discussing the rights you would ordinarily have under New York or New Jersey law
· Reviewing the financial disclosure provided by your future spouse
· Identifying provisions that are unclear, incomplete or potentially unfair
· Recommending changes when appropriate
· Communicating and negotiating with your future spouse’s attorney
· Guiding you through the final agreement and signing process
Sometimes an agreement is generally reasonable but needs clarification. Sometimes one provision has consequences that were never explained. Sometimes the written agreement does not match what the couple discussed.
Our job is to identify those issues before you sign - not years later.
The agreement may affect:
A provision that appears simple may have consequences that are not immediately obvious. Our experienced prenup attorneys will explain how the proposed agreement may affect you so that you can make an informed decision.
Receiving a draft does not mean that you must either sign it exactly as written or reject the entire idea of having a prenup.
You are allowed to ask questions and propose revisions. If changes should be considered, we can communicate directly with your future spouse’s attorney and negotiate on your behalf.
Our goal is to protect your interests while keeping the process respectful and constructive. Independent representation does not have to turn the prenup process into a battle.
H2: Do Not Wait Until the Week of the Wedding
If you have received a proposed prenuptial agreement, contact an attorney promptly. A careful review takes time, especially if financial information must be obtained, questions need to be answered or changes must be negotiated.
If your wedding is approaching, do not panic or assume that it is too late. Send us the agreement and tell us the wedding date. We will discuss the timing, what still needs to be done and whether we can assist you.

No. The attorney who prepared the prenuptial agreement represents your future spouse. You should have your own independent lawyer review the agreement and advise you based upon your circumstances and interests.
We will generally need the complete proposed prenup, any attached financial schedules or disclosures, and your wedding date. After reviewing those materials, we will let you know whether anything else is needed.
Yes. Our attorneys are licensed in New York and New Jersey. We will review the law identified in the proposed agreement and the circumstances surrounding your marriage and advise you accordingly.
Yes. A proposed prenup is a draft until both people agree to and sign the final document. If we recommend revisions, we can discuss them with you and negotiate with your future spouse’s attorney.
The cost depends upon the complexity of the agreement, the couple’s financial circumstances and the amount of negotiation required. We begin with a consultation so that we can understand what you need, explain the anticipated process and provide information about the likely legal fee. In most cases, we are able to provide a flat fee rate, so you know what to expect!
Do not sign a prenuptial agreement merely because someone tells you that it is “standard.” There is no single agreement that is right for every couple.
BrideLawyer™ provides independent prenup review and legal representation throughout New York and New Jersey. We will help you understand the agreement, explain the rights it affects and determine whether any questions or changes should be addressed before you sign.
Schedule a consultation and send us the proposed agreement along with your wedding date. An experienced New York and New Jersey prenup attorney will review your situation with you.
